PTSD & Trauma Treatment in Pakistan

By Dr. Mahmood Ali Khan, Associate Professor of Psychiatry  |  Safari Hospital, Rawalpindi  |  July 2026

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) develops after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. In Pakistan, where many people have experienced violence, accidents, natural disasters, domestic abuse, or the loss of loved ones under traumatic circumstances, PTSD is far more common than most people realise β€” and far more treatable than most people know.

What Is PTSD?

PTSD is a mental health condition triggered by a traumatic event. It causes the brain to remain in a state of high alert long after the danger has passed, as if the trauma is still happening. This is not weakness β€” it is a normal brain response to abnormal events that has become stuck.

Common Causes of PTSD in Pakistan

Symptoms of PTSD

Re-experiencing

Avoidance

Hyperarousal

Important: PTSD is often misdiagnosed or dismissed in Pakistan as "weakness" or "overthinking." It is a real medical condition with effective treatments. You do not have to suffer alone.

PTSD Treatment

Trauma-Focused CBT

The most evidence-based psychological treatment for PTSD. It helps patients safely process traumatic memories and change the thoughts and beliefs that keep them stuck in a trauma response.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing)

A specialised therapy that uses bilateral stimulation to help the brain process traumatic memories. Highly effective and often produces results faster than traditional talk therapy.

Medication

Certain antidepressants are effective for PTSD, reducing nightmares, flashbacks, and hyperarousal. Medication is most effective when combined with trauma-focused therapy.
