By Dr. Mahmood Ali Khan, Associate Professor of Psychiatry  |  Safari Hospital, Rawalpindi  |  July 2026

Anxiety is the most common mental health condition worldwide β€” and Pakistan is no exception. Millions of Pakistanis live with anxiety disorders that significantly impact their quality of life, relationships, and work performance. As a psychiatrist practising in Rawalpindi for over 20 years, I want to help you understand anxiety, recognise its symptoms, and access the effective treatments available.

What Are Anxiety Disorders?

Anxiety disorders are a group of mental health conditions characterised by excessive, persistent worry and fear that interferes with daily life. Unlike normal nervousness before an exam or interview, anxiety disorders cause distress that is disproportionate to the situation and difficult to control.

Types of Anxiety Disorders

Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

Persistent, excessive worry about everyday things β€” work, health, family, money β€” for six months or more. People with GAD find it almost impossible to stop worrying even when they know their anxiety is excessive.

Panic Disorder

Recurrent, unexpected panic attacks β€” sudden episodes of intense fear with physical symptoms like racing heart, shortness of breath, chest pain, and dizziness. Many people with panic disorder visit the emergency room believing they are having a heart attack.

Social Anxiety Disorder

Intense fear of social situations and being judged or embarrassed by others. This goes far beyond shyness β€” it can prevent people from going to work, attending school, or maintaining relationships.

Specific Phobias

Extreme fear of specific objects or situations β€” such as heights, needles, or certain animals β€” that causes significant distress or avoidance.

Physical Symptoms

Did you know? Many people with anxiety disorder visit multiple doctors for their physical symptoms before receiving a correct diagnosis. If you have ongoing physical symptoms with no clear medical cause, anxiety may be the underlying issue.

Treatment for Anxiety in Rawalpindi

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is the gold-standard treatment for anxiety disorders. It helps you identify the thought patterns that trigger anxiety and teaches you practical skills to manage your response. Most patients see significant improvement within 8–16 sessions.

Medication

Several types of medication are effective for anxiety, including SSRIs and SNRIs (antidepressants that also treat anxiety), which are safe for long-term use. Medication is particularly helpful for moderate to severe anxiety and is often combined with CBT for the best results.
