Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) develops after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. In Pakistan, where many people have experienced violence, accidents, natural disasters, domestic abuse, or the loss of loved ones under traumatic circumstances, PTSD is far more common than most people realise β and far more treatable than most people know.
What Is PTSD?
PTSD is a mental health condition triggered by a traumatic event. It causes the brain to remain in a state of high alert long after the danger has passed, as if the trauma is still happening. This is not weakness β it is a normal brain response to abnormal events that has become stuck.
Common Causes of PTSD in Pakistan
- Road traffic accidents (very common in Pakistan)
- Domestic violence or abuse
- Sexual assault
- Witnessing violence or death
- Natural disasters (floods, earthquakes)
- Childhood abuse or neglect
- Medical trauma (serious illness, ICU stays)
Symptoms of PTSD
Re-experiencing
- Flashbacks β feeling as if the trauma is happening again
- Nightmares about the traumatic event
- Intense distress when reminded of the trauma
Avoidance
- Avoiding thoughts, feelings, or reminders of the trauma
- Avoiding places, people, or activities associated with the event
- Emotional numbness and detachment from others
Hyperarousal
- Being constantly on guard, easily startled
- Difficulty sleeping
- Angry outbursts or irritability
- Difficulty concentrating
PTSD Treatment
Trauma-Focused CBT
The most evidence-based psychological treatment for PTSD. It helps patients safely process traumatic memories and change the thoughts and beliefs that keep them stuck in a trauma response.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing)
A specialised therapy that uses bilateral stimulation to help the brain process traumatic memories. Highly effective and often produces results faster than traditional talk therapy.
Medication
Certain antidepressants are effective for PTSD, reducing nightmares, flashbacks, and hyperarousal. Medication is most effective when combined with trauma-focused therapy.
